    Frequently Asked Questions

This page brings together common questions about Hospice Mid-Northland care, referrals, support services, funding, and practical next steps for patients, whānau, and health professionals.

    Common questions

Quick answers to the questions people ask most often when care and support begin.

    Accessing Care

You can self-refer by calling (09) 407 7799 or by completing our online referral form at /referral-form. Alternatively, your GP, district nurse or specialist can refer you on your behalf.

Within 24 hours we’ll acknowledge receipt. A specialist nurse will then contact you—usually within 48 hours—to arrange an initial assessment and co-develop a personalised care plan.

Any Mid-Northland resident with a life-limiting illness can access our palliative care, bereavement support and advance care planning services—regardless of age, diagnosis or ability to pay.

    Hospice Services and Funding

No. All clinical visits, counselling and advance care planning services are provided free of charge, thanks to our mixed funding model (37% government, 31% retail revenue, 32% community fundraising).

    • Home Palliative Care: Symptom management and emotional support in your home.
    • Bereavement Support: One-to-one counselling, group sessions and printed resources.
    • Advance Care Planning: Guided conversations and documentation of your healthcare wishes.

For full details, see our Services overview page.
