Hospice Mid-Northland has reopened The Cottage following a substantial refurbishment that has created a welcoming and flexible space for patients, carers, whānau, staff and community groups.
Hospice Mid-Northland does not operate an inpatient unit. The Cottage therefore provides another important way for people to connect with Hospice in person, take part in appropriate wellbeing activity and access support in a calm, comfortable environment.
A flexible place to connect
The space is expected to support day-patient-style activity, meetings, small groups and selected wellbeing services. A dedicated telehealth room will also allow some consultations and conversations to happen by video.
Telehealth has the potential to reduce unnecessary travel for patients, whānau and staff across the large Mid-Northland service area. It also gives Hospice another practical way to keep people connected with care and support when travel is difficult.
The Kerikeri Quilters are already using The Cottage each week. Hospice also expects the building to support other community groups and, once final arrangements are confirmed, potentially become available for suitable small-group use.
A project that grew
The Cottage has an attractive outdoor area that adds to its potential as a peaceful and practical community space.
Hospice Mid-Northland received $10,000 of product support through the Mitre 10 Helping Hands programme after winning a public vote. What initially appeared to be a manageable renovation became a much larger project.
Josh, Hospice Mid-Northland’s handyman, went above and beyond to complete the work. His persistence, practical skill and commitment were central to getting The Cottage ready to reopen.
