The Farming for Hospice initiative began in Mid-Northland in 2011 and we are fortunate to have experienced volunteer Bill King leading this initiative with the support of Terry Nicolle.   Between them they have decades of experience in the farming sector combined with boundless enthusiasm and energy!  Hospice Mid Northland is also incredibly grateful to Okaihau Transport Ltd, who has supported us through the pick up and delivery of livestock at no charge.

The programme entails identifying premier farmers who are happy to partner with Hospice to graze livestock on our behalf. The animals are purchased and then tagged as Hospice animals and are co-mingled with the farmers flock or herd. When the animals are on-sold the proceeds come back to Hospice and are used to fund our specialist palliative care service.  Some funds are also re-invested to grow the Farming for Hospice initiative.

The Board approved the seed funding to kick-start the project but we encourage farmers to also donate additional animals.  Anyone is more than welcome to “buy an animal” for Hospice Mid-Northland by phoning Bill King on phone 027 495 8389 or contacting hospice offices on 09 407 7799 or emailing

Working with the agricultural sector is not restricted to animals and grazing.   We hope to 'grow' on this concept to include other areas of the agricultural community.  You are welcome to discuss ideas around this concept by contacting the Fundraising and Awareness Manager at
